Truckload
Service (FTL)
Full Truckload (FTL) Service is a freight shipping method where an entire truck is dedicated to a single shipment. Unlike Less Than Truckload (LTL), where multiple shipments are combined, FTL is used when the shipment is large enough to fill the entire truck or when the shipper prefers exclusive use of the truck for security, speed, or other reasons. FTL is ideal for large, time-sensitive, or specialized shipments.

Key Features of Full Truckload (FTL) Shipping:
Exclusive Use of the Truck: The shipper uses the entire truck for one shipment, ensuring that the cargo travels directly from the origin to the destination without being combined with other shipments.
Direct Transportation: FTL shipments typically follow a direct route from the pickup point to the delivery location without making multiple stops. This reduces transit time and minimizes handling.
Cost Per Load: FTL is charged as a flat rate for the full truck, regardless of whether the truck is completely full. While it may be more expensive for smaller shipments, it’s often more cost-effective for large shipments that fill the truck.
Ideal for Large Shipments: FTL is most cost-efficient for shipments that exceed the capacity for LTL (usually more than 15,000 pounds or that take up most of the truck’s space).
Reduced Risk of Damage: Since the goods are not transferred between trucks or terminals and there is minimal handling, FTL reduces the risk of damage compared to LTL shipping.
Advantages of FTL Shipping:
Faster Transit: FTL trucks go directly from point A to point B without making stops for other deliveries, making it faster than LTL.
Lower Risk of Damage: With fewer handling points, there is a lower chance of damage or loss to the shipment.
Better for High-Volume Shipments: FTL is cost-effective for large shipments that can fill an entire truck.
Flexibility for Special Cargo: FTL is ideal for shipments that require special handling, such as oversized, hazardous, or temperature-sensitive goods, as the truck’s environment can be controlled exclusively for one shipment.
Disadvantages of FTL Shipping:
Higher Cost for Small Shipments: If the shipment doesn’t fill the truck, the cost per unit of cargo is higher than LTL, as the truck is dedicated to one shipment regardless of the size.
Less Flexibility for Smaller Loads: Shippers with smaller loads may find FTL unnecessary or too expensive compared to LTL or parcel shipping.
When to Use FTL Shipping:
Large Shipments: When you have enough cargo to fill most or all of the truck’s capacity, FTL is the best option.
Time-Sensitive Shipments: FTL provides faster delivery since the shipment travels directly to the destination with no stops.
Fragile or High-Value Goods: With minimal handling and transfers, FTL is a safer option for goods that are fragile, high-value, or require specific conditions.
Special Requirements: If your shipment requires specific handling (e.g., refrigerated goods, hazardous materials, or oversized cargo), FTL allows for customized service.
